Dear WHS Students and Parents,

We are pleased to announce that Waynesboro High School is taking part in the Virginia e-Learning Backpack Initiative, which will provide laptops to students on a 1:1 basis beginning with their 10th grade year.  This opportunity is provided to Virginia schools by grant funding through the Virginia Department of Education.  Goals of the Virginia e-Learning Backpack Initiative are to:

  • Improve student achievement and graduation and dropout rates by providing the infrastructure, tools and content necessary to extend learning capabilities and create a personalized learning experience.

  • Support virtual learning to ensure equitable learning opportunities for all students.

  • Engage all students in learning through technology to increase graduation rates.

  • Ensure college and career readiness by equipping every student with the knowledge, skills and experiences necessary for academic and workplace success.

  • Serve as a catalyst for economic development by preparing a globally competitive, technology proficient workforce to attract businesses to all regions of the commonwealth.

  • Improve the physical well-being of students by reducing the weight of backpacks and learning resources.

For the 2017-18 school year, students in the 10th, 11th, and 12th grades will be provided with one laptop each, while 9th graders will be provided with access to laptops via other resources.  Each student will maintain and care for his or her laptop (much like a textbook) throughout the duration of his or her time at Waynesboro High School.  While Waynesboro Public Schools maintains ownership of each device throughout a student's time with WPS, they will have the opportunity to purchase the laptop upon graduation from Waynesboro High School (see Acceptable Use Policy in student handbook).  Students will be able to use their laptops at school as well as at home to enhance their educational experience.   More information will be provided as we move into the 2017-18 school year.
